In some towns the main festivities are also held over the following two months, halfway between the end of the summer and the arrival of the autumn season.

In the small town of Zorita, situated in the northernmost and most mountainous part of Els Ports, the fiestas date back to the 14th century when there was already mention of a chapel, the Virgen de Balma’s sanctuary, to which people from across the region came to worship the virgin.

The tradition still continues today and takes place in September. It is a living sign of the combination of ancient customs and Marian faith.

Peñíscola celebrates its patron saint festivities in honour of the Ermita Virgin starting on September the 7th. The most curious aspect of these festivities is the dancing or Danses which is a mixture of music, dance, games and religious celebrations. The Danses comprise “dansants”, “llauradors” and “cavallets”. Let’s not forget though the spectacular and colourful Moors and Christians. These are historical representations of a past seen through the eyes of the people and different elements have been incorporated over the centuries into their storytelling, mixing anachronistic passages about the Arabs, the Turks and references to the war against the French.

Also outstanding are Onda’s patron-saint festivities in October, mainly due to the popular Fira d’Onda known throughout the region thanks to its bullfighting exhibitions. In this sense, mention must be made about the significance of bullfights, a common denominator in all Castellón’s towns and especially in the form of street bulls. Thus, the popular Arrival of Bulls and Horses at Segorbe, for which there is documentary evidence dating back to the 16th century, has kept all the character and peculiarities given to it by its creators. Especially in terms of the excitement and the risk involved in this magnificent show, where a herd of bulls is protected and guided along Colón street by some ten skilful, courageous horsemen.

This spectacular show, declared as of Tourist Interest in 1985, takes place in the second week of September, from Monday to Sunday at 2pm and is witnessed by a crowd of people which make up a wall of stereotypes along the length and breadth of the journey, transforming the capital of Alto Palancia into a bull ring for a couple of days.

Without a doubt, the options are many, suiting visitors who want to be more than simple spectators as the entire streets in Castellón are a constant fiesta all year round. For this reason we suggest a different type of route, a peculiar itinerary crossing the province based on its fiestas and popular traditions. A good way of immersing oneself into the history, the culture and the inter-breeding of a thousand-year-old land.
