This coastal town is projected as being a tourist centre and second home to the populations of the Plana region.

Its privileged location next to the sea translates into charming beaches, a fishing port, a splendid Nautical Club and a Sailing School. Soon, a vast residential estate with two 4 and 5-star hotels and two golf courses will make Burriana a must due to its enormous tourist interest.

Several excavations confirm the town’s Iberian past, although its splendour only arrived in the 9th century under Muslim rule. In 1233 it was conquered by Jaume I. In 1339 king Pere IV El Cerimoniós rewarded the town’s fidelity and granted it with the same privileges as the city of Valencia and a flag or senyera with a blue stripe and three crowns. It was in 1901 when Burriana was denominated a City by the regent queen, on behalf of king Don Alfonso.

Cultural wealth
Besides the beach, Burriana offers its visitors a large tourist journey which starts with discovering its history and its artistic and cultural heritage. Pausing at the Bell Tower which is slightly over 51 metres high we can contemplate a beautiful view of the entire Plana region. The Bell Tower was erected in the 15th century next to the San Salvador Church in primitive Gothic style and the ensemble was declared a National Artistic Monument in 1969. Special mention must be made about the rehabilitated La Mercé Convent, now converted into the Municipal Arts Centre and declared a Provincial Historic Monument.

Sea and mountain
You choose. If you are a lover of nature and its landscapes, this town brings you closer to the Espadán mountain range with its Mediterranean flora. But the most sought-after picture of this trip is in the Clot de la Mare de Déu estuary, at the mouth of the River Anna. According to the legend of this beautiful Natural Area, the statue of the Misericordia Virgin, patron-saint of Burriana was found inside a bell sunken in the river. In her honour a small chapel was built and named after her.

Wide range of sports
The privileged situation enjoyed by the town, located next to the sea, enables a wide range of water sports, such as windsurfing, sailing, rowing, paddling or fishing. Burriana can really show off its fantastic Nautical Club, Windsurf Club and Sailing School, along with lots of educational activities. The Nautical Club is located near the port, linked to the city centre and separated from the sea by a few kilometres. It has a 400 berth capacity for boats under 15m in length.

A festive town
“Burrianenses” celebrate with enthusiasm each and every one of their fiestas. The festive calendar starts on February 3rd with the celebration of San Blas. Fairs, sports competitions, concerts and theatre festivals are included in the programme for this event. Yet there is no doubt that Burriana throws itself into the fiesta also celebrated by all the people of Valencia: Las Fallas. A total of 36 papier-mâché monuments swamp the streets, exuding a true Fallas atmosphere: the smell of gunpowder, flowers and deep fried sweet buñuelos.

Paella with a personal style
Paella is known worldwide, but in the area of La Plana and especially in Burriana the personal touch given to this dish results in a specific, recognisable taste. “Marjalero” rice, “empedrao”, fish “suquet”, “a banda” rice, “fideuà” and the famous “rollets de Sant Blai” also form part of the local cuisine.
